Betting on dog racing

Before my final days in the company – and in London – my colleagues and I wanted to have a night out at ‘the dogs’.

We went at Walthamstow to bet a few pounds on speedy grey hounds, had a few drinks, a few hot dogs… We had a brilliant time.

The entrance is one pound (1£), and the bets can be as low as 0.10£. The beginning was really hard, getting around all the different types of bets you can do (win, place, forecast, forecast combination or trifecta…). You are given a little booklet at the entrance with the stats of each dog. I tried to make a few bets based on that and was appallingly wrong every time. Then I started to bet using the real time odds (money bet on each dog) and it started to be a bit better, especially when I understood that all ‘intelligent’ bets are made within the last minute. I am glad to say I did win a few bets in a row at the end and so as a result I more or less got even that knight (not all of us did).

The venue was quite nice, a little chilly – I imagine it must be really good during summer – and people there were all there for fun so that’s another good memory in the box.
